Braai slang

Braai
Braai [br-eye] is a widely used noun and verb for an outdoor ‘barbecue’ where meat is cooked over a fire or coals. Eg. ‘We’re having a braai tomorrow.’

Eish
Eish [aysh] is a colloquial exclamation of surprise, disapproval, exasperation or regret derived from Xhosa. Eg. ‘Eish, you burnt the wors’.

Is it?
Is it? [izzit] is an expression frequently used in conversation meaning ‘Is that so?’ or ‘Really?’. Eg. “The Sharks won this weekend.” Your reply: “Izzit?”
Braai etiquette

Braaimaster responsibilities
The Braai Master must light the fire.
The Braai Master must decide the all important Meat Sequence.
The Braai Master is charge of the Turning of the Meat.
The Braai Master must maintain good Coal Management.

Meat Sequence
As easy as 1,2,3,4,5
1. Chicken 2. Wors 3. Chops 4. Steak 5. Braaibroodtjies
The Braaimaster may decide his own Meat Sequence, but then he cannot blame us for poor results. Adventurous Braaiers have tried a 3,1,2,5,4 combo or even a 2,3,1,4,5 combo. But never ever try the 4,3,5,2,1 combo.

Spectator Etiquette
Never let your Braaimaster stand in the smoke.
If there is not enough space and someone must stand in the smoke, then it must fall on the last guy to join the braai.
A Spectator must respect the Braaimaster’s abilities and keep his opinions about the braai to himself.
